Only captain in the world to win all three major ICC trophies

There was Ricky Ponting, there was Stephen Fleming, and there was Michael Clarke and Graeme Smith too. These are some of the greatest captains of this era. However, none was able to win all the trophies of the game, namely ICC ODI World Cup, ICC T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy under their captaincy.

The Indian talisman, MS Dhoni though went one level above them all and won all the three trophies under his captaincy. He won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in his first stint as a captain in 2007. Then it was the euphoric 2011 ODI World Cup victory that made him only the second Indian captain after Kapil Dev to carve his name on the prestigious honor board. In 2013 he won the Champions Trophy by beating England.

First Wicket keeper batsman to lead India in Tests

Before MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid too was the captain of the Indian Test team, but he played in the capacity of a batsman and not as wicketkeeper. Dhoni, who was given the reigns in late 2008 was the first and till now the only wicket-keeper to lead India in Test cricket. In the 60 matches that Dhoni stood as captain in the whites, India won 27 of them. He also took the country to the number one spot in the Test rankings for the first time in history.

Only non Australian to win more than 100 ODI matches as a captain

Australia’s Ricky Ponting is the only captain ahead of him in terms of the number of wins as a captain in ODI cricket. Dhoni registered 110 victories in exactly 200 matches as a captain. He is also the only captain post-Australia's great Allan Border and Ricky Ponting to win more than 100 ODI matches. New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming has played more matches than Dhoni as a captain, but could only manage to win 98 out of the 218. Thus Dhoni remains the only non-Australian captain to win more than 100 ODIs.

Highest individual score for a wicket keeper batsman in ODIs

Dhoni’s blistering 183 not out against Sri Lanka that he scored at Jaipur in 2005 is still the highest individual score for a wicket-keeper batsman in ODI cricket. Chasing a target of 299, Dhoni’s innings proved to be instrumental as he made 183 in just 145 deliveries to finish the match in the 47th over itself. The second man on the list of highest individual scores as a wicket-keeper batsman in ODI cricket is Australia’s, Adam Gilchrist. He had scored 172 against Zimbabwe in 2004.

Most number of stumpings as a wicket keeper

Being an Asian wicket-keeper, it is natural that Dhoni had more chances of stumping a batsman than other keepers. It was mainly because Asian pitches supported spin bowling.

Therefore he surpassed Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper batsman, Kumar Sangakkara in 2017 and now has 123 stumpings to his credit. Second, on the list, Sangakkara has 99 in his kitty.

Played most number of IPL finals as a captain

Dhoni wasn’t just having a Midas touch in international cricket. In a domestic championship like the Indian Premier League (IPL) too, he was leading his side bravely. So much so that till now, in 11 out 12 seasons (10 for CSK and one for RPS) that he has captained, his team has made it to the playoffs of all the seasons. He has led CSK to three IPL titles. In terms of leading the team to most victories in IPL, Dhoni sits at the top with 99 wins, while in terms of trophies; he is one behind Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians.

Second Indian after Kapil Dev to be inducted in the Territorial Army

Dhoni was finally able to live his dream of wearing the prestigious ‘Olive Greens’ when he was conferred with an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, a non-combat wing of the Indian Army.

He became only the second Indian cricketer after legendary and former World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev to receive this honor. Dhoni was presented with this opportunity after he had successfully led team India to the 2011 ODI World Cup victory for the first time in 28 years. He was conferred with the honor on November 1, 2011.
